Build knowledge in a structured way

Fundamentals

• Understand OSI and TCP/IP models in a practical way
• Learn how systems exchange data logically
• Build the essential vocabulary for later chapters

Learning Goal

After this chapter, the basic structure of networks, the logic of communication and the key foundational concepts for later topics should be clear.

Understanding Switching

• See how switches forward data inside a LAN
• Understand why MAC addresses matter locally
• Grasp the structure of small and medium-sized LANs

Learning Goal

After this chapter, local network structure, switching behavior and logical device organization inside a LAN should be clear.

Routing Logic

• Understand the role of a gateway
• Learn how packets choose the next path
• Recognize why routing is required between separated networks

Learning Goal

After this chapter, data flow between networks, routing logic and the value of network separation should be clear.

Narrowing Down Problems

• Use ping and trace with better understanding
• Check issues step by step instead of guessing
• Identify common failure sources logically

Learning Goal

After this chapter, problems should be analyzed methodically: clearly, structurally and in a traceable way.
